Speaker and lighting back boxes prevent sound energy from escaping a space through a recessed can light in the ceiling. Sound energy emanating from the back of a ceiling mounted speaker will pass into the space above via the joist cavity unless a back box is installed.

Back boxes contain this sound energy and help to prevent the spread of fire.

The ECCOBOX thermo-acoustic speaker and lighting enclosures are constructed of recycled, compressed 1" cotton and designed to isolate speaker back wave sound transmission within a wall or ceiling structure. ECCOBOX enclosures are also ideally suited to prevent sound transmission through a recessed lighting fixture from heel impact and upper level noise. Introducing the Sound Block In-Wall Back Box. This enclosure is designed to isolate the inwall and in-ceiling speaker back wave, as well as offer thermal insulation. It is constructed from a new Class-A, non flammable, urethane foam. This material will not support mold or crumble over time like standard urethanes. Custom sizes can be produced to adapt to multiple speaker sizes and cavity dimensions.
